Sophia Yin, DVM, CAAB, M.S. Animal Science (1966-2014)
Published: April 01, 2021

Dr. Sophia Yin knew what it’s like to have a problem pet and nowhere to turn for professional help. And she witnessed countless fractured relationships between misunderstood pets and their frustrated human companions. As a result, her mission in life was to improve our understanding of animals and their behavior so that we can care for, appreciate and enjoy our time with them better.

Dr. Yin worked at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists, wrote for several veterinary and popular magazines, and consulted for several zoos. In addition, she also lectured, taught workshops internationally on animal behavior and Low Stress Handling®, and served as a behavior expert for shows such as Dogs 101 on Animal Planet. She served on the executive board for the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) Handling Guidelines Committee, and the American Humane Association (AHA) Animal Behavior and Training Advisory Committee. Dr. Yin was a respected author and creator of multiple educational DVDs that addressed animal care, handling, and training.

Her “pet-friendly” techniques for animal handling and behavior modification, many of which she developed herself through the scientific method of research and rigorous testing, are shaping the new standard of care for Veterinarians, Petcare and other Companion and Farm Animal professionals.

She passed away in September of 2014 but her work and legacy lives on.
