New law, effective Jan. 1, is designed to stave off drug diversion
Tallahassee, Fla. — Veterinary practices that sell prescription drugs in Florida must purchase a permit to do so, a
new law states.
The mandate, which takes effect Jan. 1, is designed to discourage drug diversion. In addition to the permit requirement, the language amends state code to stipulate that veterinary prescription drugs must not be sold in excess of the amount clearly indicated on the order or beyond the date indicated in the order, which is valid for one year. A veterinary prescription drug retail establishment also may not purchase, sell, trade or possess human prescription drugs or controlled substances. All drugs must be sold in their original, sealed packaging with the proper labeling, the law says.
