Course Information:
This course is designed to review common procedures performed in the emergency and critical care setting that should be performed by veterinary technician/technologists. This course will focus on the concepts of indications, procedural steps, and nursing care of the following procedures: nasoesophageal (NE) and nasogastric (NG) feeding tube placement, nutritional care, urinary catheterization (male and female, canine and feline), multi-lumen catheterization (central and peripheral), arterial blood sampling, arterial catheterization, blood gas analysis (venous and arterial), transfusion therapy, nasal oxygen cannula placement, advanced respiratory tube care, and defibrillation.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify the indications for each procedure.
  • Recognize the technical steps to be able to successfully perform each procedure.
  • Understand the nursing care involved for each procedure.
Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VSPN CE course will be open for enrollment veterinary technicians/technologists, support staff, veterinary teams, etc. - actively interested in advancing their emergency procedural skill set.

RACE Accreditation: This program has been RACE approved for 4.5 hours of continuing education credit for veterinary technicians/technologists in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval. (20-1207824)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session August 7): Feeding Tubes & Urinary Catheters
This week we will be covering the care and utilization of nasal feeding tubes and urinary catheters. We will also be covering feeding tube care, nutritional support, urinary catheter care, and care of the renal patient.

Week 2 (Real Time Session August 14): Venous & Arterial Catheters
This week we will be discussing the indications for central venous and arterial catheters. We will discuss the procedures of placing those catheters and how to care for them. We will be discussing arterial blood pressure monitoring, as well as what parameters are used for arterial and venous blood gas analysis.

Week 3 (Real Time Session August 21): Transfusions, Respiratory & Defibrillation
This week will be covering indications for blood transfusions, blood product administration and nursing care of patients receive blood component therapy. We will also be covering nursing care for nasal cannulas, log term intubation, and advanced respiratory illness. Identifying the indications and procedure steps for defibrillation will also be covered.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
