Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course is for members of the veterinary medical team concerned about, or responsible for, maintaining infection control within the veterinary hospital setting, including isolation procedures, protective equipment and antibiotic use.

Course Description:
Infection control and biosecurity play an increasingly important role in the management of veterinary patients. This course will look at the different components to infection control and biosecurity and what can be implemented, from hand hygiene protocols to barrier nursing, to protect both staff and patient from infectious diseases. We will look at what is involved in creating a hospital infection control policy, as ideally all veterinary practices should have a written infection control plan. The issue of multidrug resistance will also be discussed, to ensure all participants have an understanding of what this means to our patients, or clinics and us as veterinary staff. Finally we will look at the prevention of surgical site infections, including all aspects of patient, operating theatre, surgical team and equipment preparation. Risk factors for surgical site infections will be discussed, including how to avoid them.
Week 1 (Real Time Session July 14):
Biosecurity for the Veterinary Practice
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand the difference between infection control and biosecurity
- Understand the processes involved in reducing the risk of transmission of infection and infectious disease between animals, i.e. animal to animal, human to animal, and animal to human.
- Create specific protocols for specific areas of infection control, e.g. hand hygiene, cleaning and disinfection.
Week 2 (Real Time Session July 21):
Creating a Hospital Infection Control Policy and Multidrug Resistance
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand the importance of biosecurity, and how this should be addressed within their clinic.
- Create an infection control protocol(s) for their individual clinic
- Explain what is meant by multidrug resistance
- Describe the types of topical antimicrobials available, and their mode of action
Week 3 (Real Time Session July 28):
Prevention of Surgical Site Infections
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Explain the types of surgical site infections
- Understand how to control aspects of infection control relating the operating theatre environment, theatre staff, patient, and surgical site
- Explain the risk factors that can contribute to a patient developing a surgical site infection
- Demonstrate how surgical site infections can be prevented
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Louise O�Dwyer, MBA BSc (Hons), RVN, DipAVN (Medical & Surgical), VTS (Anesthesia/Analgesia & ECC) gained her Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) in 2004 followed by her Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Medical) in 2007 and Veterinary Technician Specialist (Emergency and Critical Care) in 2011. She has contributed to over 20 journal articles and books, and lectures regularly on all aspects of anesthesia, emergency and critical care and infection control. She worked as Head Nurse, and then Clinical Director, for PetMedics in Manchester, the largest emergency clinic in the UK for 15 years, and in October 2016 took up the role of Clinical Support Manager for Vets Now. Louise�s interests include all aspects of emergency care but particularly trauma patients, as well as anesthesia, infection control and wound management. Louise is the co-author of 'Practical Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Nursing' as well as �Wound Management in Small Animals: A Practical Guide for Veterinary Nurses and Technicians�, and the BSAVA �Pocketbook for Nurses� and the forthcoming �A Veterinary Nurse's Guide to Infection Prevention and Control� due 2016ABOUT_INSTRUCTORS - embolden the first instance of the instructors name.##

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
