Level and Prerequisites:
This intermediate course is focused towards the veterinary technician and veterinary assistant who sees exotic small mammal patients in practice or has an interest in learning about exotic small mammal nursing care.

This course is approved by RACE for veterinary technicians/technologists (RACE program #22-17656).

Course Description:
This course will teach participants the nursing skills needed to successfully care for exotic small mammals such as rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas and other small rodents in a clinical setting. This interactive class will discuss how to properly house and care for these unique species as well as perform a proper physical examination. Participants will also learn a variety of nursing skills such as venipuncture techniques, catheterization sites and fluid therapy routes, radiographic positioning, diagnostic sample collection and syringe/hand feeding techniques. This class can be used for CE credit for the AVTCP Exotic Companion Animal VTS application.
Week 1 (Real Time Session April 9): Basic Husbandry and Hospitalization
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand and demonstrate proper husbandry for hospitalized rabbits, ferrets and rodents
- Show an understanding of basic exotic small animal anatomy
- Discuss basic dietary needs of exotic mammals
- Show an understanding of basic equipment needed to work with exotics in clinical practice
Week 2 (Real Time Session April 23): Physical Examination and Venipuncture Techniques
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Discuss restraint and physical examinations techniques
- Illustrate venipuncture techniques and have the ability to obtain various diagnostic samples
Week 3 (Real Time Session April 30): Fluid Therapy, Catheterization and Basic Stabilization Techniques
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Identify various intravenous and intraosseous catheters sites
- Discuss use of fluid therapy
- Describe triage and basic stabilization techniques
Week 4 (Real Time Session May 7): Radiographic Positioning, Diagnostic Sampling and Nursing Care
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe radiographic positioning for exotic small mammals
- Discuss sedation and anesthesia techniques
- Describe hand feeding and general nursing care
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
*The lecture portion of this course will utilize both text and audio presentation, please be prepared to listen.

About the Instructor:
Jody Nugent-Deal, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia/Analgesia, Clinical Practice-Exotic Companion Animal) has worked for the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital since 1999, working in the companion exotics department for 10 years and currently the small animal anesthesia department where she is the supervisor. Ms. Nugent-Deal is a founding member of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice and is the executive secretary for the group as well as the appeals committee chair. Jody is an active member with the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia having served on the nominations, credentials and appeals committees. Jody is currently a Member At Large for the AVTAA. Jody also serves on the board for CaRVTA. Ms. Nugent-Deal has lectured throughout North America since 2000 on anesthesia and various exotic animal topics. Jody has published numerous articles and book chapters for both canine/feline and exotic animal medicine and anesthesia topics. Jody is an instructor for both VSPN, VetMedTeam and PennFoster Veterinary Technician Program. She has a special interest in anesthesia, analgesia, pain management and critical care in exotics and dogs and cats. In Jody�s spare time, she loves to read, visit the ocean, run, road and mountain bike.
