Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is for all veterinary staff and will focus on common canine and feline allergic issues seen in small animal practice.
VSPN CE Course: This course was RACE approved for veterinary technicians only. (RACE program #22-10944)

Course Description:
Skin conditions are one of the most common problems seen in day to day small animal practice. Some of the most frequent presenting complaints are itching, ear infections, hair loss, and �hot spots�. Allergies are a common underlying cause for these problems. Veterinary technicians play a vital role in the management of allergic patients through obtaining complete histories, performing diagnostic tests, and providing client education. This course will support that role by providing an overview of canine and feline allergies.

This course consists of one (1) Real Time Session of ninety (90) minutes each, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session). Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. About the Instructor: Thomas Hansen is a graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and works in both a general practice and an emergency practice in the San Francisco East Bay area. He is currently working towards becoming boarded in canine and feline practice (ABVP).

Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session January 13): Canine and Feline Allergies
Recommended reading (prior to the January 13 Real Time Session): It is recommended, though not required, that participants read the background materials for this condition in the course library.
Content:
We will start by discussing the common presentation of an allergic patient. The potential causes for the presenting complaint (i.e. differentials) and history taking will be discussed. The focus will be a discussion of the different types of allergies, their management, and client education

CE Credits: 1.5

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
