Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists, and support staff, actively interested in the fundamentals of equine nutrition from both a veterinary and owner perspective.

Course Description:
A proper understanding of the equine digestive system and how to feed for optimum performance and health is an extremely important topic for owners, caretakers, and those who work in equine veterinary practices. This course will cover basic anatomy and physiology of the equine digestive tract, nutrients required as well as equine feeds available. We will discuss in detail how to assist clients and veterinarians in evaluating, formulating, and balancing an equine ration. We will also consider feed related pathologies such as colic, laminitis, and metabolic disease.
Week 1 (Real Time Session July 13):
Proper Equine Diet Formulation
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Examine a ration for an individual horse and assist the client and veterinarian in formulating and evaluating appropriate changes as needed.
- Discuss and give examples of various types of roughage, concentrates, and supplements available in order to satisfy equine nutritional requirements.
Week 2 (Real Time Session July 20):
Anatomy and Physiology of the Equine Digestive System and a Discussion of Nutrients Required
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Recognize and name the physiology and anatomy of the equine digestive system, how it differs from other animal species, and why that is important.
- Identify the nutrients required in the equine diet.
Week 3 (Real Time Session July 27):
Feeding Related Pathological Conditions
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Identify conditions that are feeding related, their causes and treatments
- Explain specific feed related pathologies and give examples of how best to prevent their occurrence as well as to manage these pathologies nutritionally should they occur
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Shelley Shopsowitz, RVT, BA graduated from Seneca College�s Animal Health Technology program. Prior to attending Seneca College, Shelley earned a Bachelor�s Degree of Arts in Spanish (with honors) from University of Toronto. She has completed several advanced education courses in equine medicine through the University of Guelph, Michigan State University and University of Edinburgh. Shelley has worked with both large and small animals over the past sixteen years and has taught over 45 RACE approved continual education courses for VSPN in topics that include dermatology, parasitology, equine nutrition and behavior, small mammal handling and restraint and the VTNE Review.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
