Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course is an essential part of practice management for all involved with controlled substance tracking and documentation. All veterinary staff members, office managers, practice managers, hospital administrators, supervisors, and veterinarians are welcome to join the course and its discussions.
VSPN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/support staff or veterinary technicians/support staff only. This course has been RACE approved for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. This course has been approved by VHMA for CVPM credits. (RACE # 22-19277, VHMA # 09-06).
NOTE: Veterinarians should check with their state/provincial boards regarding course approval for pharmacy or regulatory content requirements.

Course Description:
This course is designed to provide practical guidance on the administration of a controlled substance accountability program in the veterinary hospital. The course will present an overview of the DEA regulations including, registration, ordering, security, dispensing, accountability, inventories, and problem resolution scenarios that are likely to happen in a veterinary practice setting.
Week 1 (Real Time Session February 22):
Before the Drugs Arrive-Registration, Security and Ordering
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Distinguish when a DEA registration is required
- Prepare orders and submit them for controlled substances using the proper channel
Week 2 (Real Time Session February 29):
Drugs on Site, Logs, and Accountability
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Design security protocols to safeguard controlled substances under their control
- Outline and apply documentation required inventories of controlled substances
Week 3 (Real Time Session March 7):
Inventories & Disposing of Unwanted Drugs
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Create and maintain a practical accountability (log) system to account or controlled substance activities
- Demonstrate proper disposal of unwanted or outdated controlled substances
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructors:
Philip Seibert, CVT is a Certified Veterinary Technician with over 36 years� experience. He is a full-time author and consultant to the profession. Because he has taken the lead in "deciphering" the regulatory agency rules affecting the veterinary profession and has been able to provide practical, veterinary-specific advice Phil has earned the reputation of the veterinary profession's OSHA expert. Recognizing the power of interactive learning, Phil is the founder and Director of the OSHA Center on the Veterinary Information Network. He regularly teaches several interactive courses on VIN and VSPN.
Phil became the first veterinary technician to evaluate and accredit veterinary hospitals for the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) because of his extensive clinical and managerial experience and skills. The experience of "inspecting" over 1200 hospitals has given him a unique perspective of our profession that he uses to provide the most practical answers to our profession�s issues.
He has contributed to several well respected professional works including McCurnin's Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians, Five-Minute Veterinary Practice Management Consult and Veterinary Practice Management Secrets. He has authored numerous books and videos for the American Animal Hospital Association on practice safety. His self-produced books, The Complete Veterinary Practice Regulatory Compliance Manual and Safety Issues for the Veterinary Hospital Staff are in their sixth editions.
Phil is the author of many articles dealing with veterinary hospital administration which have appeared in national publications such as Journal of the AVMA, Veterinary Economics, AAHA Trends, Veterinary Forum, DVM Newsmagazine, the Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Practice STAFF and Veterinary Practice News. He is also the founder and Managing Editor of the profession's only safety-specific newsletter, The Veterinary Safety & Health Digest.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
