Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience

Level and Prerequisites: This
basic course is focused toward veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and individuals considering a career move into a supervisor position or management role.
VSPN CE Course: This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinary technicians only. This course is approved by the VHMA for CVPM credits. (VHMA #10-03)

Course Description:
Are you considering a career move to practice management? Or have you been given a management title and seeking help? Either way, this program is for YOU! The goal of this course is to enable and empower veterinary technicians and assistants in basic practice management principles becoming a more valuable asset to their veterinary team. The course will cover the importance and use of an employee handbook, safety regulations and laws. We will review hospital budgets, inventory control, performance reviews, and goal setting. We will dive into effective team meetings and career development towards practice management. Hop on board! Together, we will elevate your understanding in practice management!
This course consists of four (4) Real Time Sessions of ninety (90) minutes each, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple
choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session).
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- summarize the contents of an employee handbook to better understand its contents.
- explain the benefits of having and utilizing an employee handbook.
- outline basic laws governing the workplace.
- recognize the importance of employee confidentiality.
- distinguish between exempt and non-exempt employee status for wage and overtime pay.
- outline why OSHA was established and how it protects employees.
- identify safety hazards, the importance of safety and how it is everyone�s responsibility.
- identify personal protective equipment within the workplace.
- outline safety training and locate safety resources.
- explain the importance of secondary labeling.
- paraphrase the concept of workman�s compensation insurance.
- outline an agenda and participate in meaningful team meetings.
- recognize the importance of effective communication and benefits of a team meeting.
- outline and engage in meaningful team performance reviews.
- prepare and use supportive feedback.
- summarize a hospital budget.
- distinguish between the concepts of supply and demand.
- defend inventory control as a cost effective way of directly maintaining overhead.
- extend tools for success to an inventory specialist.
- outline career goals for a supervisor or manager to include becoming a CVPM and/or PHR.

About the Instructor:
Rebecca Rose has been a CVT with over 25 years of experience in the veterinary community. She is the Founder and President of CATALYST Veterinary Practice Consultants, LLC. She consults with veterinary hospitals, has authored two books on veterinary technician careers, writes peer reviewed articles, and is a contributing author in a text book for veterinary technicians. Rebecca sits on several professional councils and committees. She is currently the President-Elect of NAVTA.
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session August 12):
Benefits of an Employee Handbook and Laws Governing Small Businesses
Content:
The first week of class we will discuss how often an employee handbook needs to be reviewed/revised, and when to use it. We will identify the benefits of having an updated handbook. For those of you without a handbook we will discuss ways to create one for your team. Laws governing small businesses, labor laws, and confidentiality will be topics of the evening. Participants will learn how to critique current employee handbooks and how to create or revise one. We will cover what should be in a handbook and why. Tips for finding laws governing small businesses by state will also be included.
Week 2 (Real Time Session August 19):
Managing Safety Issues within Veterinary Practices
Content:
During the 2nd week we will discuss OSHA, laws governing safety within the workplace, and OSHA consults. Increasing safety awareness and implementation of safety training is the role of management and you will be shown how to bring this about. We will cover Safety Data Sheets (formerly MSDS), secondary labeling, and personal protective equipment. Safety hazards, review current statistics on injuries within veterinary practices and Workman�s Compensation Insurance will be included. Finally, we will include tips on finding laws governing safety by state.
Week 3 (Real Time Session August 26):
Team Meetings and Performance Reviews
Content:
Week 3 will cover the advantages of effective team meetings, how to create productive meetings, agendas and follow-through. We will also discuss how to set up performance reviews and options. As a manager it is imperative to offer proper, adequate feedback in a timely fashion. We will discuss establishing goals and assist your team in achieving a more satisfying, professional career. Participants will learn how to create interactive, meaningful, open-minded team meetings. Finally, we will include tips on how to find resources regarding human resource development.
Week 4 (Real Time Session September 2):
Hospital Budgets and Inventory Control
Content:
During the final week we will dissect a budget, determine what the categories and percentages mean, and how to implement a budget. We will also discuss the importance of tightly maintained inventory, how to identify an inventory specialist. Together we will create an inventory protocol that maintains adequate stock and turnover in products. We will conclude this week by learning how to work with an accountant and how to read veterinary hospital financial reports.

VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
