Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience
in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first
Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session
is up to 1 hour in length.

Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course course is focused toward veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and individuals considering a career move into a supervisor position or management role.
VSPN CE Course: Open to VIN and VSPN members.
This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinary technicians/technologists.
This course has been approved by the VHMA for CVPM credit.(#10-03)
Course Description:
Are you considering a career move to practice management? Or have you been given a management title and seeking help? Either way, this program is for YOU! The goal of this course is to enable and empower veterinary technicians and assistants in basic practice management principles becoming a more valuable asset to their veterinary team. The course will cover the importance and use of an employee handbook, safety regulations and laws. We will review hospital budgets, inventory control, performance reviews, and goal setting. We will dive into effective team meetings and career development towards practice management. Hop on board! Together, we will elevate your understanding of practice management!
Week 1 (Real Time Session May 1):
Benefits of an Employee Handbook and Laws Governing Small Businesses
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Summarize the contents of an employee handbook to better understand its contents
- Explain the benefits of having and utilizing an employee handbook
- Outline basic laws governing the workplace
- Recognize the importance of employee confidentiality
- Distinguish between exempt and non-exempt employee status for wage and overtime pay
Week 2 (Real Time Session May 8):
Managing Safety Issues within Veterinary Practices
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Outline why OSHA was established and how it protects employees
- Identify safety hazards, the importance of safety and how it is everyone�s responsibility
- Identify personal protective equipment within the workplace
- Outline safety training and locate safety resources
- Explain the importance of secondary labeling
- Paraphrase the concept of workman�s compensation insurance
Week 3 (Real Time Session May 15):
Team Meetings and Performance Reviews
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Outline an agenda and participate in meaningful team meetings
- Recognize the importance of effective communication and benefits of a team meeting
- Outline and engage in meaningful team performance reviews
- Prepare and use supportive feedback
Week 4 (Real Time Session May 22):
Hospital Budgets and Inventory Control
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Summarize a hospital budget
- Distinguish between the concepts of supply and demand
- Defend inventory control as a cost effective way of directly maintaining overhead
- Extend tools for success to an inventory specialist
- Outline career goals for a supervisor or manager to include becoming a CVPM and/or PHR
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructors:
Julie Singer, LVT, CVPM. is a 1979 graduate of Houston Community College Veterinary Technology Program, has attended Wharton County Junior College and Houston Community College business courses, and completed the Human Resource Program at Rice University. Julie is an editor and contributor to the Mosby Comprehensive Review for Veterinary Technicians textbook. Julie has lectured for Merck, Intervet, Shirt Sleeve Seminars Management Workshops and has lectured at Wild West Veterinary Conference, Seminars@ Sea, and AVMA Annual Convention and TVMA. She has taught continuing education for Veterinary Support Personnel Network since 2012. Julie is a board moderator for Veterinary Support Personnel Network, member of Veterinary Team Association of Texas, National Association of Veterinary Technicians, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Equine Veterinarians, Veterinary Hospital Managers Association, Certified Veterinary Practice Manager�s Association, Society for Human Resource Management and her local Houston Veterinary Practice Manager Association. An LVT since 1979 and CVPM since 2001, she is a practice management consultant and currently manages a large AAHA practice.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
- Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org
and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants;
personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
- Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration.
