Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course is geared toward new grads looking for
practical guidance as they venture forth into the unpredictable world of
small animal general practice. It may also serve as a review for more
experienced practitioners or as an introduction for those transitioning
from other practice areas. There are no prerequisites.
VIN CE Course: Open to ALL recent grads and VIN members.
This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians.

Course Description:
This course is the third of a multiple module series designed to give an
overview of common cases/presentations in small animal day practice.
Different topics will be presented each week, and each discussion will
include highlights on pathophysiology, case presentation, differentials,
diagnostic approach, treatment recommendations, and case examples where
appropriate. Important non-technical skills will also be included.
This course consists of four (4) 2-hour Real Time Sessions, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- recognize and address common presentations seen in everyday practice.
- give differentials for common (and uncommon!) cases.
- develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.
- better communicate with clients and associates.
- field common questions from clients.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Julie Meadows graduated from the UC Davis School of
Veterinary Medicine in 1988 with a focus in small animal medicine.
She entered private practice in California's Central Valley, where she
practiced small animal medicine, surgery and emergency medicine.
After 20 years in private practice, including 10 as a practice owner,
she returned to UC Davis where she is now Chief of Community Medicine and
an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology.
Dr. Thomas Hansen is a 2008 graduate of the UC Davis School
of Veterinary Medicine and works in the San Francisco East Bay (general practice
and emergency). His favorite areas of practice are internal medicine, emergency
medicine, and ultrasound. He is currently working towards becoming boarded in
canine and feline practice (ABVP).
Dr. Carl Darby attended Cambridge University School of
Veterinary Medicine and graduated with honors in 1991. After working in
private practice, Dr Darby became a board certified specialist in avian
medicine in 2003 and has owned Seneca Falls veterinary hospital since 2006.
Dr. Susan Cohen is a Social Worker specializing in the
Human-Animal Bond. She spent 28 years at the Animal Medical Center in New York
and now works as a consultant assisting veterinary practices with issues of
communication, stress, and morale.

Week 1 (Real Time Session November 24, 2014):
Anxiety and Empowerment

Content:
How to deal with common sources of anxiety as a new veterinarian
as well as how to become a mentor in your practice.
Week 2 (Real Time Session December 1, 2014):
Obstacles in Daily Practice
Instructor(s): Juliana Meadows, DVM
Content:
Pet Insurance, drug interactions that trip you up/monitoring schedules
for chronic medications, writing/calling in prescriptions, navigating
compounding pharmacies, how to taper prednisone, EPA vs FDA.
Week 3 (Real Time Session December 8, 2014):
Common Cases

Content:
A case-based presentation covering common cardiovascular, endocrine,
and neurologic presentations seen in daytime general practice. Emphasis
will be placed on the specific case but common differentials will also be addressed.
Week 4 (Real Time Session December 15, 2014):
Soft Tissue Surgery and Respiratory Disease

Content:
Common respiratory diseases of dogs and cats, including upper respiratory
infections, sinus disease, laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea, pneumonia,
asthma, bronchitis, and lung neoplasia. Soft tissue surgery, including handling
of soft tissues and good surgical techniques, techniques and complications
associated with spay and neuter of dogs and cats, and mass removal and
laceration repair in dogs and cats.
CE Credits: 8
Tuition: FREE for 2012, 2013 and 2014 graduates.
The course content, the course transcript, message board and library will
be made available to the general VIN membership after the course closes,
but VIN members who just can't wait may enroll at the standard course cost:
VIN members $168 ($151 early bird special if enrolled by November 3, 2014)
Veterinary students (unless scheduled to graduate in 2014) are not eligible
to enroll in this course (but as a VIN member, you will have access to
the content after the class).
