Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience
in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first
Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session
is up to 1 hour in length.

Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course is geared towards new and recent grads looking
for practical guidance as they venture forth into the unpredictable world of small
animal general practice. It may also serve as a review for more experienced
practitioners or as an introduction for those transitioning from other practice areas.
There are no prerequisites.
VIN CE Course: Open to all recent graduates and VIN members.
This course has been RACE approved for veterinarians only.
Course Description:
This course is the second of a multiple module series designed to give an overview
of common cases/presentations in small animal day practice. Different topics will
be presented each week, and each discussion will include highlights on pathophysiology,
case presentation, differentials, diagnostic approach, treatment recommendations,
and case examples where appropriate. Important non-technical skills will also be included.
This course consists of four(4) 2-hour Real Time Sessions, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- Recognize and address common presentations seen in everyday practice.
- Give differentials for common (and uncommon!) cases.
- Develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.
- Better communicate with clients and associates.
- Field common questions from clients.

in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Julie Meadows graduated from the UC Davis School of Veterinary
Medicine in 1988 with a focus in small animal medicine. She entered private practice
in California's Central Valley, where she practiced small animal medicine, surgery
and emergency medicine. After 20 years in private practice, including 10 as a practice
owner, she returned to UC Davis where she is now Chief of Community Medicine and an
assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology.
Dr. Thomas Hansen is a recent graduate (2008) of the UC Davis School
of Veterinary Medicine and works in the San Francisco East Bay (general practice and
emergency). His favorite areas of practice are internal medicine, emergency medicine,
and ultrasound. He is currently working towards becoming boarded in canine and feline
practice (ABVP).
Dr. Carl Darby attended Cambridge University School of Veterinary
Medicine and graduated with honors in 1991. After working in private practice,
Dr. Darby became a board certified specialist in avian medicine in 2003 and has
owned Seneca Falls veterinary hospital since 2006.
Dr. Susan Cohen is a Social Worker specializing in the
Human-Animal Bond. She spent 28 years at the Animal Medical Center in New York
and now works as a consultant assisting veterinary practices with issues of
communication, stress, and morale.

Life as a new associate: Time management, communication about sensitive
issues (money, adherence to treatment, medical mistakes), interpersonal
issues at work.
Week 2 (Real Time Session October 7, 2013):
Common Presentations
Instructor(s): Julie Meadows, DVM
Content:
Minor injuries/major drama (bleeding toenails, footpad lacerations,
bite/scratch wounds, etc), lumps and bumps.
Week 3 (Real Time Session October 14, 2013):
Dentistry and Orthopedics
Instructor(s): Carl Darby, DVM
Content:
Dentistry (oral exams, charting, radiographs) and Orthopedics
(slipped disks, cruciate tears, hip dysplasia).
Week 4 (Real Time Session October 21, 2013):
Genito/Urinary Tract Issues
Instructor(s): Tom Hanson, DVM
Content:
Genito/urinary tract issues in dogs and cats (Bladder stones, FLUTD,
incontinence, spraying), Pyometra, Prostatitis.
CE CREDITS: 8
Tuition: FREE for 2011, 2012, and 2013 graduates
Member $160 ($144 early bird special if enrolled by September 9, 2013)
Veterinary students, unless scheduled to graduate in 2013, are not
eligible to enroll in this course.
