Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience

Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course is geared toward new grads looking for
practical guidance as they venture forth into the unpredictable world
of small animal general practice. It may also serve as a review for
more experienced practitioners or as an introduction for those
transitioning from other practice areas. There are no prerequisites.
VIN CE Course: Open to ALL recent grads and VIN members.
This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians.
The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.
Course Description:
This course is the first of a multiple module series designed to give
an overview of common cases/presentations in small animal day practice.
Different topics will be presented each week, and each discussion will
include highlights on pathophysiology, case presentation, differentials,
diagnostic approach, treatment recommendations, and case examples where
appropriate. Important non-technical skills will also be included.
This course consists of four (4) 2-hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- Recognize and address common presentations seen in everyday practice
- Give differentials for common (and uncommon!) cases
- Develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans
- Communicate with clients regarding money, euthanasia and compliance
- Field common questions from clients

About the Instructors:
Dr. Julie Meadows graduated from the UC Davis School of
Veterinary Medicine in 1988 with a focus in small animal medicine.
She entered private practice in California's Central Valley, where she
practiced small animal medicine, surgery and emergency medicine.
After 20 years in private practice, including 10 as a practice owner,
she returned to UC Davis where she is now Chief of Community Medicine and
an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology.
Dr. Thomas Hansen is a recent graduate (2008) of the
UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and works in the San Francisco East Bay
(general practice and emergency). His favorite areas of practice are internal medicine,
emergency medicine, and ultrasound. He is currently working towards becoming
boarded in canine and feline practice (ABVP).
Dr. Carl Darby attended Cambridge University School of Veterinary
Medicine and graduated with honors in 1991. After working in private practice,
Dr. Darby became a board certified specialist in avian medicine in 2003
and has owned Seneca Falls veterinary hospital since 2006.
Susan Cohen is Clinical Social Worker specializing in the
Human-Animal bond. She spent 30 years at the Animal Medical Center in New York and
now works as a consultant assisting veterinary practices with issues of
communication stress and morale.

This session will cover "money talk", euthanasia, compassion fatigue, and compliance.
Week 2 (Real Time Session November 23, 2015):
Wellness

Content:
This session will cover nutrition, common questions from clients,
vaccines, preventatives (deworming, flea control), and behavior.
Week 3 (Real Time Session November 30, 2015):
Common Presentations I (GI/Dermatology)
Instructor: Tom Hansen, DVM
Content:
This session will provide an overview of common GI and skin-related
presentations: pathophysiology review, generating differentials,
developing a rational diagnostic/therapeutic plan, and case examples.
Week 4 (Real Time Session December 7, 2015):
Common Presentations II (Ears/Eyes)

Content:
This session will review common presentations of the ears and eyes.
CE Credits: 8
Tuition: FREE for 2013, 2014, and 2015 graduates.
Member $168 ($151 early bird special if enrolled by October 26, 2015)
The course content, transcripts, message board, and library will be made available
to the general VIN membership after the course closes, but VIN members who just
cannot wait may enroll at the standard cost.
Veterinary students (unless scheduled to graduate in 2015) are not eligible to
enroll in this course but as a VIN member you will have access to the course
content after the course closes.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
