Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session is up to 1 hour in length. For more information, please visit the CE Practice Area.

*The instructors for this course will be using audio which will require you to have a headset or speakers to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your computer's audio capabilities, please be sure to attend one of the Practice Sessions.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is open to VIN members and recent grads. For recent grads, this course can provide practical guidance as they venture forth into the unpredictable world of small animal general practice. For more experienced practitioners, it can serve as a review or as an introduction for those transitioning from other practice areas.
VIN CE Course: Open to recent grads and VIN members. This course has been RACE approved for veterinarians.

Course Description:
This is a new course offered FREE to new graduates, thanks to the VIN Foundation. The VIN Foundation (http://vinfoundation.com) is committed to helping you (and all new graduates) feel supported as you journey into and through our profession. As part of this commitment to the new grad, the VIN Foundation is covering your enrollment fee.

This course is designed to give an overview of common cases/presentations in small animal day practice. Different topics will be presented each week, and each discussion will include highlights on pathophysiology, case presentation, differentials, diagnostic approach, treatment recommendations, and case examples where appropriate. Important non-technical skills (client compliance and communication, money matters, etc.) will also be included.

This course consists of four (4) 2-hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session). Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Julie Meadows graduated from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1988 with a focus in small animal medicine. She entered private practice in California's Central Valley, where she practiced small animal medicine, surgery and emergency medicine. After 20 years in private practice, including 10 as a practice owner, she returned to UC Davis where she is now Chief of Community Medicine and an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology.

Dr. Thomas Hansen is a recent graduate (2008) of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and works in the San Francisco East Bay (general practice and emergency). His favorite areas of practice are internal medicine, emergency medicine, and ultrasound. He is currently working towards becoming boarded in canine and feline practice (ABVP).

Dr. Carl Darby attended Cambridge University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with honors in 1991. After working in private practice, Dr Darby became a board certified specialist in avian medicine in 2003 and has owned Seneca Falls veterinary hospital since 2006.

Susan Cohen is Clinical Social Worker specializing in the Human-Animal bond. She spent 30 years at the Animal Medical Center in New York and now works as a consultant assisting veterinary practices with issues of communication stress and morale.

Tuition: FREE for 2010, 2011 and 2012 graduates.
Veterinary students (unless scheduled to graduate in 2012) are not eligible to enroll in this course.

The course content, the course transcript, message board and library will be made available to the general VIN membership after the course closes, but VIN members who just can't wait may enroll at the standard course cost.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
