Course Description

Week 1 (8/4): Diagnostic approach to problems in nephrology including PUPD,azotemia, hematuria, pyuria, oliguria, renomegaly and proteinuria (Katherine James, DVM, PhD)

Week 2 (8/11): 1) Renal imaging (Craig Long, DVM, ACVR (Diagnostic Imaging))
2) The pathophysiology of chronic renal failure, including acidosis, anemia, hypertension, metabolic bone disease, and electrolyte disorders. Management of cats and dogs with chronic renal failure will discuss both intervention to delay progression and to ameliorate of clinical signs. (Katherine James, DVM, PhD)

Week 3 (8/18): The diagnostic approach to proteinuria in dogs and cats, including use and interpretation of the UPC ratio and microalbuminuria testing. Causes of glomerular disease will be discussed, including extra-glomerular inflammatory diseases, the different types of glomerulonephritis, amyloidosis, and hereditary diseases. General and specific treatment of glomerular diseases will also be discussed. (Barrak Pressler, DVM, ACVIM (Internal Medicine)

Week 4 (8/25): Acute Renal Failure. This section will focus on identification of and proactive management of acute renal failure in dogs and cats. Management techniques detiled will include fluid and pharmacologic manipulations, nutrition, labwork and monitoring parameters, and dialysis. Discussion will follow on common and uncommon causes of ARF, and one or more illustrative cases will be presented. (Julie Fischer, DVM, DACVIM)

Week 5 (9/1): 1) Nephrolithiasis - Etipathogenesis and management of nephrolithiasis including diagnosis and specific treatments of metabolically silent and active kidney stone disease. (Joe Bartges,DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DACVN )
2) Acute and chronic ureteral obstruction This section will focus on diagnosis and management of acute and chronic ureteral obstruction, primarily in cats. Both mineralized and non-mineralized causes of obstruction will be covered and one or more cases will be used as examples. (Julie Fischer, DVM, DACVIM)

Week 6 (9/8): Tubular disease and pyelonephritis - Etiopathogenesis and management of tubular diseases and pyelonephritis including specific and supportive care. Discussion of tubular diseases will include isolated and generalized diseases. (Joe Bartges,DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DACVN )

Week 7 (9/15): A case-based review of common (and not-so-common) nephrology cases. We will be reinforcing many of the points covered in the previous 6 weeks by discussing specific patients' presentation, diagnostic work-up, and treatment. (Barrak Pressler, DVM, ACVIM (Internal Medicine)

COURSE WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND POLICY: Withdrawal prior to the listed start date of a course entitles the registrant to a complete refund or a credit toward a future VIN CE course, whichever is preferred. Withdrawal within 1 week after the listed start date (i.e. including no more than one real-time session) entitles the registrant to a credit toward any future VIN CE course. (Does not apply to courses with only one real-time session.) After the first real-time session, a registrant may withdraw due to special circumstances and receive prorated credit towards a future VIN course. These requests will be handled on an individual basis. The amount of the prorated credit will be determined based on 65% of the time remaining in the course at the time of withdrawal. It is not possible to withdraw retroactively.
