This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians
actively interested in the etiology, pathophysiology and treatment of diabetes mellitus.
Participants are expected to have a basic knowledge of the disease.

Course Information:
The fields of canine and feline diabetes mellitus have seen many
changes over the last decade in terms of what we think are causative
factors and what we think constitutes gold standard treatment.
However, many factors remain unknown and with the advent of new
insulin types, incretin-based therapies, internet fora, increasing
numbers of pet owners being diabetic themselves and a financial
crisis to battle with, dealing with this disease has perhaps never
been as complicated.
This course aims to provide a balanced view on all recent developments,
always trying to stay close to actual evidence. As such, it should
provide participants with the most up-to-date knowledge when it comes
to understanding and treating diabetes mellitus, ready to face even
the most critical client.
Issues discussed will include the genetic background to companion
animal diabetes mellitus, how to achieve diabetic remission, the use
of novel insulin analogues and GLP-1 based therapy, different types
of diabetes such as acromegaly-induced, protocols for dealing with
diabetic keto-acidosis and structural approaches to the most
challenging diabetic cases.
Week 1 (Real Time Session November 12, 2017):
Pathophysiology of Feline and Canine Diabetes Mellitus Update

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand the essential differences in etiology of
canine and feline diabetes mellitus.
- understand the various negative pathophysiological cycles
affecting the diabetic cat, including possible glucotoxicity
and amyloidogenesis phenomena.
- understand the implications on treatment options for both species.
Week 2 (Real Time Session November 19, 2017):
Treatment of Feline Diabetes and Diabetic Remission: An Evidence-Based Approach

- understand the treatment options available for feline diabetes
mellitus and their respective pros and cons.

Treatment of Canine Diabetes and Approach to the Difficult Diabetic

- understand the insulin and non-insulin treatment options
available for the diabetic dog.
- practice a logical and systematic approach to the difficult
diabetic ruling in or out common causes of unstable diabetes mellitus.
Week 4 (Real Time Session December 10, 2017):
Improving Your Success Rate with Diabetic Keto-Acidosis and Assessing Quality of Life in Companion Animal Diabetes Mellitus

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- develop a successful treatment and monitoring plan for dogs and
cats presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis.
- understand the psychosocial impact of diabetes mellitus on pet and owner.
- adapt the treatment regimen to positively influence the
psychosocial impact of diabetes mellitus for pet and owner.
Week 5 (Real Time Session December 17, 2017):
Feline Acromegaly and Diabetes Mellitus Management on a Budget

Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand the need to consider underlying acromegaly in every diabetic cat.
- understand the need to offer screening for acromegaly in diabetic cats
as well as the best tests to perform such screening.
- understand the impact of finances in success rates
in diabetes mellitus management.
- understand the various tricks that can be used to limit the costs involved
in diabetic management.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Stijn Niessen is a Senior Lecturer and Co-Head of Internal Medicine
at the Royal Veterinary College in London, UK. He is a board-certified
internist with a PhD in diabetes mellitus. As part of his clinical
activities Dr Niessen runs a dedicated Diabetic Remission Clinic,
a Hypophysectomy Clinic and an Acromegalic Cat Clinic. Dr Niessen
has also developed a free Pet Diabetes App for use by pet owners to
record and communicate important aspects of their diabetic pet's health
status with the veterinary care team (available for free download onto
smartphones and tablets, from Android

Stijn is also a VIN Endocrinology consultant and currently President
of The European Society of Veterinary Endocrinology.
