Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians
actively interested in respiratory distress in dogs and cats.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
This course has been RACE approved for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
Course Description:
Respiratory distress is a common presenting sign for dogs and cats, especially in emergency hospitals.
Effective emergency management is achieved by identifying the anatomic location of the pattern.
Recognizing respiratory patterns helps with efficient localization.
This course consists of one (1) 2-hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- recognize breathing patterns and localize the area(s) of concern within the respiratory tree.
- describe multiple possible modalities for providing supplemental oxygen to dogs and cats.
- list several differential diagnoses for causes of respiratory distress using an anatomy-based
approach to respiratory distress.
Course Materials: Course materials will be available
in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook(s): There is no required textbook for this course.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Tony Johnson is a 1996 graduate of Washington State University College
of Veterinary Medicine. After completing a one-year internship in California, he chose to
pursue a three-year residency in emergency medicine and critical care at Dove Lewis
Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland, Oregon. In October, 2003 he became ACVECC board
certified. Dr. Johnson went on to practice critical care medicine in Chicago, Illinois
and Gaithersburg Maryland before joining VIN. He is also on faculty and runs the
critical care unit at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, and has
lectured at several local and national veterinary conferences. He was inadvertently
voted Speaker of the Year for the Western Veterinary Conference for 2010, and has somehow
won several teaching awards. Dr. Johnson's special interests include pain management,
bacon, mechanical ventilation, trauma, blood banking and transfusion medicine.
In his free time, he enjoys woodworking, blogging, counting his vast fortune in debt, cooking,
SCUBA diving and raising his 2 young sons and daughter. He is married to Gretchen Statz,
also a veterinary criticalist.
Dr. Amy Carr is the managing partner at California Veterinary Specialists'
Murrieta facility where she also oversees emergency and critical care services. She is the
director for CVS' internship and residency programs. Dr. Carr obtained her DVM from the
University of MN in 1988 and has practiced emergency medicine exclusively since then.
After completing an alternate track residency, she became a diplomate of the American College
of Emergency and Critical Care in 1999. She is an active volunteer for the American College
of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and is currently serving a second term as regent.
She is a consultant in emergency and critical care for the Veterinary Information Network.
When not working she is trying to herd her three children, ages 22, 20 and 18 toward
responsible adulthood. She is married to her best friend, business and life partner
Tim Concannon, also an emergency specialist. In addition to their three human kids,
one neurotic cat and one goofy Irish setter complete the household.
Dr. Byers is the faculty criticalist and internist at MidWest Veterinary
Specialty Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, and is an Adjunct Associate Professor of
Emergency/Critical Care at Kansas State University. He is a VIN consultant for the
Emergency and Internal Medicine folders, and have published several peer-reviewed manuscript
and textbook chapters. He is also the co-author of the textbook, "
Handbook of Veterinary
Emergency Protocols: Dog and Cat."
