Course Description
Canine influenza is a newly emerging, highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs. The infection is caused by an influenza A subtype H3N8 virus originally isolated in 2004 from racing greyhounds with a "kennel cough" illness. Molecular analyses indicate that the canine H3N8 virus is most closely related to equine influenza H3N8 viruses. The genetic similarity between equine and canine H3N8 viruses is consistent with the transfer of the complete genome of an influenza virus from horse to dog, followed by adaptation of the virus to dogs allowing for efficient replication and transmission of infection between dogs.

This course will provide an overview of influenza virus infection in dogs, including susceptibility, transmission, clinical disease, treatment approaches, diagnostic tests, prevention strategies, and use of syndromic surveillance for location of virus activity in North America and definition of risk groups for infection. The course instructors will share their experiences with canine influenza virus infections in racing greyhounds and in dogs in shelters, boarding facilities, and veterinary clinics.
