Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians actively interested in US laws regarding antibiotic use in food animals. This non-interactive course is open to VIN members only.
VIN CE Course: Open to VIN members. This non-interactive course is approved by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 22-38940)

Course Description:
This course will cover the regulatory landscape of using antibiotics in food animals. It is designed to be a companion course to the food animal antimicrobial resistance webinar. The course will cover applicable United States regulations as well as the history of how we got to where we are today. There will be a detailed discussion of the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) regulations and a walk-through of how to write a VFD.

This course will consist of 3 non-interactive modules in the form of videos to watched. Modules will include handouts to be read and an end-of-module quiz. The final module will include an end-of-course test.

To earn a certificate of completion, the participant must attain a score of 80% for each module quiz and for the end-of-course test. Completion of all 3 modules (videos, reading handouts, quizzes, and end-of-course test) will take a minimum of 120 minutes to complete. Participants must complete the participation requirements by December 31, 2020 to be eligible for a certificate.

Module 1: Regulations & Oversight (USA)
Total Time: 60 minutes
Video: 45 minutes
Polls: 3 minutes
Activities: 12 minutes
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

  • Explain US restrictions for antibiotic use in food animals.
  • Identify antibiotics with ELDU restrictions in the United States.

Module 2: Veterinary Feed Directive
Total Time: 30 minutes
Video: 27 minutes
Polls: 3 minutes
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

  • Write a legal VFD.
  • Explain what each section of the VFD is for.

Module 3: VFD Records, Responsibilities, and Details
Total Time: 30 minutes
Video: 12 minutes
Polls: 3 minutes
End of Course Test: 15 minutes
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

  • Describe the veterinarian requirements for VFDs.
  • Explain how medicated feeds are handled in minor species.

About the Presenter:
Lauren Eichstadt Forsythe graduated from the University of Findlay, College of Pharmacy in May 2015. Following completion of her PharmD degree, Dr. Forsythe completed a one-year veterinary pharmacy residency at Purdue University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Forsythe started as a veterinary pharmacist at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. She is a consultant on the VIN Clinical Pharmacology boards.
