Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinarians actively interested in the immune system and its role in preventing cancer.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians. The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.

Course Description:
The immune system plays an important role in preventing cancer and attacking malignant cells once a tumor occurs. This course is designed to explain the interplay between tumor cells and the immune system during tumor development, with an emphasis on the key immune cells that play roles in both eliminating the tumor cells as well as assisting in tumor growth, as well as how the tumor tricks the immune system in order to prevent antitumor immunity. Moreover, this course will cover novel cancer immunotherapeutics, both currently available for veterinary use and novel therapies being researched. After this course, participants will have a better understanding of tumor immunity and available immune system-based therapies to better inform their clients and consider alternate cancer therapies.

This course consists of two (2) 2-hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to

• understand the 3E's (elimination, equilibrium and escape) of tumor development in an immune competent animal.
• learn about the key immune cells that play roles in tumor elimination and tumor progression.
• know what cancer immunotherapies have been tested in veterinary patients and which ones are currently available for use in small animals.
• know what new immunotherapies are being researched and might appear in the veterinary market at some point.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Guth received her PhD in 2003 from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center where she studied B cells and autoimmunity at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado. She then completed her DVM at Colorado State University in 2007 and worked as a post-doctoral fellow studying lung immunology and innate immunity in cancer. She currently is a Research Scientist at Colorado State University where she studies the role of myeloid cells in cancer and the development of novel immunotherapies for cancer and metastatic disease. She also has an interest in developing novel cancer vaccines and understanding the role of the immune system in combination immunotherapy and chemotherapy or radiation therapy. She teaches classes on tumor immunology, clinical trials and large animal immunology. She co-wrote the Immunotherapy Chapter in Withrow and MacEwen's Small Animal Clinical Oncology 5e textbook and the Cancer Immunotherapy chapter in Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy Volume XV.
