Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. *The presenters for this course will be using audio which will require you to have a headset or speakers to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your computer's audio capabilities, please be sure to attend one of the Practice Sessions.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinarians actively interested in complementary supportive therapies for the oncology patient. To get the most out of this course, it is recommended that the participant have a basic knowledge of cancer biology.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 22-28206 )

Course Information:
This course will cover several therapies used to help support the cancer patient including acupuncture, herbal medicine, and nutritional support. We will discuss how these complementary therapies may be used to support the overall health of the oncology patient as well as potentially reduce the side effects of cancer treatment.

Week 1 (Real Time Session March 13, 2017): The Role of Acupuncture in Supporting the Oncology Patient

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. About the Presenters:
Dr. Kate Vickery is a board certified medical oncologist and received her training at Colorado State University, Flint Animal Cancer Center. After several years in practice, a personal experience led her to become interested in acupuncture as a complementary therapy for oncology patients. She went on to become certified in veterinary acupuncture at the Chi Institute in Florida. Dr Vickery currently practices acupuncture, in conjunction with traditional cancer treatments, at Hope Veterinary Specialists in Malvern, PA. She has lectured nationally on the topics of veterinary oncology and veterinary acupuncture. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and contributed articles to veterinary blogs on the topic of acupuncture in the veterinary oncology patient.

Dr. Barbara Fougere is qualified in both Chinese and Western herbal medicine holding Graduate Diplomas and a Master's degree in herbal medicine. She teaches on the post graduate qualifications Graduate Diploma of Veterinary Western Herbal Medicine and Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine and the IVAS Certification course in Chinese herbal medicine. She has almost 30 years' experience in integrating these therapies and is a co-author on the textbook Veterinary Herbal Medicine. She has been the president of the Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association and is the current chairperson of the newly incorporated American College of Veterinary Botanical medicine. She enjoys growing herbs and uses herbs regularly in her practice.

Dr. Catherine Lenox graduated from veterinary school at the University of Missouri in 2007. She then went on to complete a small animal medicine and surgery internship at Colorado State University and a small animal nutrition residency at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. She was board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition in 2011. Dr. Lenox is also certified in veterinary acupuncture. After three years in specialty practice, Dr. Lenox joined Royal Canin USA in 2014. She is currently Scientific Affairs Manager at Royal Canin.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.
