advanced course will be open to veterinarians
actively interested in advanced topics in rabbit medicine and surgery.

Course Description:
This course is the first of four modules in the ECM (Exotic Companion Mammal)
Review series. Each course focuses on specific exotic companion mammal species,
covering the medicine and disease presentations common to that species.
The focus of this course is rabbits.
The course can be used as a portion of the preparation for the
ABVP Exotic Companion Mammal examination, but it is not designed as a test-preparation course.
The instructors do not have access to the examination questions. Also, material in this course
may be more current than that in the examination. However it will allow those preparing for
the examination to work systematically through different topics, accomplishing a broad review.
The emphasis will be on pathophysiology, serving as a foundation for good case management.
This course consists of two (2) 2-hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- Discuss emerging and developing disease presentations in the rabbit.
- Be aware of current diagnostic and treatment plans for these emerging issues.
- Have the resources to take routine practice "to the next level."

in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Sandra Mitchell was one of the first veterinarians to be recognized
by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners as an Exotic Companion Mammal specialist.
She has been treating rabbits since her graduation from the New York State College
of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. She is a regular speaker at exotic conferences,
and will be presenting two topics at the upcoming Association of Exotic Mammal
Veterinarian conference in Oakland, CA. Dr. Mitchell is contacted by veterinarians
worldwide to discuss difficult cases, and enjoys writing about and presenting
interesting cases. She is currently owner of Animal Medical Associates in Saco, Maine;
and sees referrals of exotics from all over the northeast. In addition to treating a
variety of exotics, she also shares her home with a wide range of animals
(currently numbering 28) with species ranging from reptiles to companion mammals
to homo sapiens (her husband).
Dr. Angela Lennox has practiced exclusively exotic animal medicine
for over 20 years. She is the owner of Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic of Indianapolis,
and the past President of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV).
She is the editor of the AEMV section of the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine.
Dr. Lennox is a frequent lecturer at exotic animal conferences both nationally
and internationally. She is the co-author of Clinical Radiology of Exotic Companion Mammals.
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session January 16, 2013)
Content:
- Rabbit Gastrointestinal Syndrome (RGIS) - Diagnosis and Treatment
This session covers recognition of RGIS and early identification of surgical
candidates using criteria such as response to therapy and serial radiography.
Options for medical management are covered, as well as anesthesia and surgical
techniques when indicated.
- E. Cuniculi (ECUN) in Rabbits - What's New?
ECUN is difficult to confirm in pet rabbits, and diagnostic options are still
in development and frequently debated as to usefulness. Diagnosis includes
ruling out diseases also known to cause similar symptoms. This session will
provide updates on ECUN diagnosis and management.
Week 2 (Real Time Session January 23, 2013)
Content:
- Rabbit Adrenocortical Disease (ACD)
Rabbit ACD is a newly recognized syndrome characterized by aggression in
older spayed or castrated rabbits. While there are few published and
reported cases, this session presents our current understanding of
diagnosis and treatment.
- Dental Disease - Periapical Abscesses
Periapical abscesses are a common sequelae to severe acquired dental disease.
Treatment depends on a number of factors, including severity, site of origin,
and the presence or absence of diseased teeth and bone. Complicated cases
require diagnostic modalities such as CT or MRI, which also helps direct
treatment options.
