Course Information:
Keeping a few chickens in the backyard has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity over the last two decades, with the backyard chicken becoming one of the most common birds presenting for veterinary care. This course aims to give you more confidence in approaching your backyard poultry cases by firstly introducing pet chicken husbandry and nutrition, the clinical exam, diagnostic testing, and common diseases. It will then conclude with a discussion on analgesia, anesthesia, and surgery.


Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • discuss the husbandry and nutrition of backyard poultry.
  • apply the principles of clinical reasoning to companion poultry, including:
    • Obtaining a relevant history of the patient and the problem.
    • Conducting a thorough physical examination.
    • Selecting and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing.
    • Developing a problem list, differential diagnoses, and finally a diagnosis.
  • understand the use (and restrictions) of common medications.
  • understand common diseases of backyard poultry.
  • understand how avian anatomy and physiology affect the use of analgesia and anesthesia in poultry.
  • discuss common surgical problems in poultry.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists interested in backyard poultry.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 10 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 20-1220816)

Week 1 (Real Time Session December 1, 2024): An Introduction to Backyard Poultry

  • Origins of poultry
  • Husbandry of chickens, ducks, and turkeys
  • Nutrition
  • Incubation and chick rearing
  • Legal implications of keeping and treating backyard poultry

Week 2 (Real Time Session December 8, 2024): Clinical Approach to the Backyard Chicken

  • The physical examination
  • Collecting diagnostic samples
  • Clinical pathology

Week 5 (Real Time Session December 29, 2024): Analgesia, Anesthesia, and Surgery

This session will cover:
  • Principles of analgesia and anesthesia
  • Common surgical procedures
