This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians
actively interested in avian cardiology.
Participants are expected to have some basic knowledge of avian medicine.

Course Information:
Cardiovascular disease has traditionally been thought to be a rare occurrence
in companion birds, but a growing body of evidence collected over the last few
decades indicates otherwise. It is frequently encountered in practice and poses
a serious threat to the quality of life and longevity of many avian species.
Successful intervention requires a foundational understanding of relevant anatomy
and physiology, recognition of clinical disease states and awareness of risk factors,
accurate and timely diagnosis, and innovative treatment approaches incorporating
both available information specific to birds and components of therapy in human
and small animal cardiovascular medicine. This course reviews avian cardiovascular
anatomy, recognized disease states and their pathophysiology, and current diagnostic
options and treatment approaches.
Week 1 (Real Time Session November 1, 2017):
Avian Cardiovascular Anatomy and Physiology

- identify avian anatomy and physiology and indicate how it differs from mammalian anatomy.
- indicate the anatomical differences between species groups.
- describe the anatomy of adjacent respiratory structures of clinical significance.
Week 2 (Real Time Session November 8, 2017):
Clinical Cardiovascular Disease States

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- identify cardiovascular disease states.
- describe cardiovascular disease pathophysiology,
clinical and pathologic features, prevalence and common risks factors.
- recognize atherosclerosis as the likely underlying factor
in the majority of non-infectious cardiovascular diseases.
- correctly diagnose non-infectious cardiovascular disease and treat it.
Week 3 (Real Time Session November 15, 2017):
Cardiovascular Disease Diagnostics

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe current diagnostic options and their strengths and weaknesses.
- identify the key elements of a complete workup, starting from a thorough
history and physical examination followed by clinical pathology,
radiographic imaging, ultrasonography, and electrocardiography.
- describe how to utilize endoscopy and advanced imaging, including
computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnostic process.
Week 4 (Real Time Session November 22, 2017):
Managing Cardiovascular Disease in Birds

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe treatment options, risk assessment and preventative considerations
for cardiovascular disease.
- implement treatment approaches that incorporate both available information
specific to birds and components of therapy in human and small animal
cardiovascular medicine.
- describe treatment approaches for medical management of cardiovascular disease
even though limited pharmacologic data in avian species complicates the options.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Required Textbook(s): There is no required textbook for this course.
About the Presenters:
Brian Speer was raised in a small town in California's central
coast area. He received his baccalaureate of science degree in biological sciences
with a concentration in zoology from California Polytechnic State University in 1978,
and his DVM degree from the University of California at Davis in 1983.
Since 1989, he has limited his practice in the San Francisco Bay area to include
exclusively bird species, where his patients include companion and aviary birds,
breeding bird collections, zoological display collections, and performing animals.
Brian received his board specialty status through the American Board of Veterinary
Practitioners in February 1996, and was certified in the European College of Avian
Medicine and Surgery in 1999.
Brenna Fitzgerald is a 2007 graduate of Texas A&M University College
of Veterinary Medicine. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Hendrix College,
Conway, Arkansas in 2001. Prior to joining the Medical Center for Birds, she worked as
an associate veterinarian in a private, multi-doctor practice in Dallas, Texas, where
she practiced small animal, avian, and exotic animal medicine. Brenna also contributed
to a research project at the Gastrointestinal Laboratory, Department of Small Animal
Clinical Sciences at Texas A&M University, where she developed a working knowledge
of laboratory methods. Dr. Fitzgerald received her ABVP diplomacy with a specialty
in avian medicine in 2012.
