Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians, veterinary students, and
new grads interested in reviewing fish husbandry, diagnostics, diseases and therapy.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians (VIN members only) and veterinary students.
This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians.

Course Description:
This is a basic presentation of how to approach a fish case in practice.
It includes basic fish anatomy, water quality, common disease conditions,
and diagnostic and therapy options for fish.
This course consists of two (2) 2-hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- understand water quality and its effect on the health of fish.
- approach a fish case clinically for diagnostics.
- recognize some of the common diseases of fish.

in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Drury Reavill is a VIN consultant (Aquatic Animal Medicine Folder)
and has over 25 years of experience in avian and exotic clinical practice, laboratory
diagnostics and pathology.
She graduated from Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986
and practiced at the Avian Medical Center of Sacramento, as well as provided clinical
consultation and laboratory services to practitioners through California Avian Laboratory
(a national service exclusively devoted to avian and exotic animals) and California
Veterinary Diagnostic Labs of West Sacramento.
She completed her residency in anatomic pathology (including instruction in zoo pathology
and course work at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology) and gained board certification
from American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) in 2000. Drury is also a Diplomate
of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, obtaining Avian Practice Certification
in 1993 (recertified 2003 and 2013) and Reptile and Amphibian Certification in 2013.
Dr. Bronwyn Szignarowitz operates a mobile fish medicine and surgery practice,
as well as practicing clinical small animal medicine, in northern California.
She is an exotic companion animal and fish medicine referral veterinarian for the UC Davis
School of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Szignarowitz earned her Bachelor of Science (Animal Science/Aquaculture), Doctor
of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine (Koi Herpes Virus)
degrees at the University of California at Davis.
She has worked with the Atlantic Veterinary College and Canadian aquaculture facilities
on Prince Edward Island and with the University of Chile and Chilean aquaculture facilities
in Valdivia and on Chiloe Island. Dr. Szignarowitz is a past member of the AVMA's Clinical
Practitioners Advisory Committee for Fish Medicine.
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session February 23)
Content:
We will discuss husbandry, how to work-up a clinical case,
various diagnostics, and treatment of common types of fish diseases.
Week 2 (Real Time Session March 2)
Content:
We will present an overview of the common fish diseases
including etiology, relevant clinical signs, lesions, and prognosis if appropriate.
