Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians actively interested in pharmacology for exotic companion mammals. Areas discussed will include antibiotics, anti-parasiticides, pain control, topical treatments, and sedatives for minor procedures. Basic anatomy and physiology of the exotic companion species covered will be a helpful, but not necessary, prerequisite for this course.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians . The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.

Course Description:
This course will cover the basic application of pharmacological principles to common exotic companion mammal applications. This will include the selection and use of antibiotics for various organ systems including respiratory disease, dermal disease, conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, and genitourinary tract of different species. Also addressed will be the use of anti-parasiticides both topically and parenterally in a variety of exotic companion mammal species. Next, the course will address pain control in all of the commonly seen exotic companion mammals (ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchilla, and small rodents). The appropriate use of topical preparations in some frequently seen conditions, such as pododermatitis and self mutilation, will be discussed. Lastly, the use of sedatives and anesthetics in order to accomplish minor procedures in these exotic companion mammal species will be covered.

This course consists of six (6) ninety (90) minute Real Time Session, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructors:
Sandra Mitchell was one of the first veterinarians to be recognized by the American Board of Veterinary Medicine as an Exotic Companion Mammal specialist. She has been treating small companion mammals since her graduation from the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. Dr. Mitchell is contacted by veterinarians worldwide to discuss difficult cases. She is currently the owner of Animal Medical Associates in Saco, Maine; and sees referrals of rodents and other exotics from all over the northeast. In addition to her professional interest in exotic companion mammals, she has owned every species discussed in this class at one time or another!

Nancy Costlow graduated as a Doctor of Pharmacy from Purdue University. At Purdue she developed an avid interest in pharmaceutical compounding and honed these skills with the support of established experts. In 2009 she joined the Roadrunner Pharmacy team and began her journey as a veterinary compounder. Dr. Costlow has the privilege of being one of the traveling speakers for Roadrunner and enjoys collaborating with veterinary professionals from around the country.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
