Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first Real Time Session. Times and dates will be listed in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held prior to the first Real Time Session.

*The instructors for this course will be using audio for answering questions which will require you to have a headset or speakers to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your computer's audio capabilities, please be sure to attend one of the Practice Sessions.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is geared toward new grads looking for pracitcal guidance as they venture forth into the unpredictable world of veterinary medicine, but it can be useful to those already experienced in ER work.
VIN CE Course: Open to all recent grads and VIN members. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians only.

Course Description:
You recently were or soon will be diagnosed with a new condition -- DOCTOR!
The transition from NOT doctor to THE doctor is a scary one. You don't know it yet, but you already know a lot and are ready to do this. You have the knowledge and many of the skills. Transforming that competence into confidence is the next big step in your journey. "Getting Thru the Night" Part I is the first of a series of 3 CE modules offered yearly FREE to New Graduates, thanks to the VIN Foundation.

There will be minimal emphasis on pathophysiology and a strong emphasis on diagnostic testing, client management, time management and therapy for various common emergencies. Common mistakes will be highlighted so YOU don't make them and common pitfalls will be mentioned so YOU can avoid them. Many revelations will be made and many long-held beliefs will be shattered. This will be a whirlwind magical tour through the whimsical world of blood and guts ER stuff! Wear your running shoes! This is the opposite of the Ivory Tower.

This course consists of two (2) 2-hour Real Time Sessions with audio for questions and answers, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

*A portion of the lectures will be presented using audio. Please be prepared to listen.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Johnson is a 1996 graduate of Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing a one-year internship in California, he chose to pursue a three-year residency in emergency medicine and critical care at Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland, Oregon. In October, 2003 he became ACVECC board certified. Dr. Johnson went on to practice critical care medicine in Chicago, Illinois and Gaithersburg Maryland before joining VIN. He is also on faculty and runs the critical care unit at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, and has lectured at several local and national veterinary conferences. He was inadvertently voted Speaker of the Year for the Western Veterinary Conference for 2010, and has somehow won several teaching awards. Dr. Johnson's special interests include pain management, bacon, mechanical ventilation, trauma, blood banking and transfusion medicine. In his free time, he enjoys woodworking, blogging, counting his vast fortune in debt, cooking, SCUBA diving and raising his young son, Connor. He is married to Gretchen Statz, also a veterinary criticalist.

Dr. Palmer is a 2006 graduate of Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After receiving his DVM he served three years in the US Army Veterinary Corps as a Veterinary Corps Officer where he deployed to Iraq from Oct 2007 to Jan 2009 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is currently an Emergency/Critical Care resident at Auburn University CVM as well as an Associate Editor for VIN. He continues to serve as a veterinarian in the US Army Veterinary Service (Reserve Component).

Dr. Carr is the managing partner at California Veterinary Specialists' Murrieta facility where she also oversees emergency and critical care services. She is also the director for CVS' internship and residency programs. Dr. Carr obtained her DVM from the University of MN in 1988 and has practiced emergency medicine exclusively since then. She became a diplomate of the American College of Emergency and Critical Care in 1999. She has since served the College on the Residency Training Committee for six years, and is currently a regent. Prior to becoming a partner at CVS, Dr. Carr was the director of the Emergency Pet Clinic in Temecula from 1992 to 2000. She is a consultant in emergency and critical care for the Veterinary Information Network. When not working she is trying to herd her three children, ages 20, 18 and 16 toward responsible adulthood. She is married to her best friend, business and life partner Tim Concannon DACVECC. In addition to their three human kids, one neurotic cat and one goofy Irish setter complete the household.

The course content, the course transcript, message boards, and library will be available to the general membership after the course closes, but VIN membbers who just can't wait may enroll at the standard course cost.

VIN members: $80 ($72 early bird special if enrolled by June 3, 2012).

Veterinary students (unless scheduled to graduate in 2012) are not eligible to enroll in this course (but as a VIN member, you will have access to the content after the class closes).
