Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course,
we request you attend a practice session prior to the first Real Time Session. Times and dates will be listed
in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held
prior to the first Real Time Session.
*The instructors for this course will be using audio which will require you to have a headset or speakers to listen.

Level and Prerequisites: This
advanced course will be of greatest benefit
to those who perform differentials and review hematology on their own.
Participants should have a basic knowledge of hematology with hands-on experience in viewing microscope slides.
A review of hematology principles prior to taking this course would be of benefit. We recommend
Fundamentals of Veterinary Clinical Pathology; see the
Recommended texts on this page.
Also of benefit would be a review of the hematology slides posted in the
Clinical Pathology Image Library
on VIN.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians.
This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians.
Course Description:
The primary purpose of the course is to increase familiarity with
blood cells, and apply this knowledge to specific conditions in hematology
including unusual hereditary conditions, toxicities,
changes associated with chemotherapy and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia.
A review of pathophysiology is included to enable correlation between
function and disease.
The information presented will also include the use of in-house machines
including techniques
to understand the quality assurance methods necessary to achieve confidence
in the machines.
This course consists of seven (7) 2-hour Real Time Sessions,
supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory
end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
*A portion of the lectures will be presented using audio. Please be prepared to listen.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- Understand the molecular biology behind the responses of the bone marrow to disease.
- Identify morphologic abnormalities in white cells, red cells and platelets
and how these correspond to specific disease states.
- Develop a quality assurance program for their in-house hematology analyzers.
- Be familiar with toxins that have a direct effect on hematology parameters.
- Understand the pathophysiology of IMHA and consider options for therapy.
- Understand the sequential changes associated with chemotherapy
and the newer techniques for identification of the specific forms of leukemia.
Course Materials: Course materials will be available
in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Todd Archer received his DVM from Mississippi State University in 2006
and completed a small animal internal medicine residency at Mississippi State in 2010.
Dr. Archer is a small animal internal medicine diplomate of the ACVIM.
Dr. Archer is currently at Mississippi State University.
Dr. Kathleen P. Freeman received her DVM from Oklahoma State University in 1981,
her MS from Oklahoma State University in 1984 and her PhD from Oklahoma State University in 1987.
Dr. Freeman is a diplomate of the ECVCP in clinical pathology.
Dr. Freeman is currently employed by IDEXX laboratories in the UK and is a VIN consultant.
Dr. Rebekah G. Gunn-Christie received her DVM from North Carolina State University in 2004
and completed a Clinical Pathology residency at the University of Florida in 2007.
Dr. Gunn-Christie is a diplomate of the ACVP in clinical pathology.
Dr. Gunn-Christie is currently employed by Antech Diagnostics, is assistant adjunct professor at NCSU
and is a VIN consultant.
Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant received her DVM from North Carolina State University in 1985,
her PhD from Kansas State University in 1993 and completed a residency in anatomic pathology
at Kansas State University.
Dr. Gwaltney-Brant is a pharmacology/toxicology diplomate of the ABT and the ABVT.
Dr. Gwaltney-Brant is currently at the University of Illinois and is a VIN consultant.
Dr. Linda Kidd received her DVM from the University of Wisconsin in 1991
and completed residency training in small animal internal medicine from the University of Wisconsin in 2000.
She received a PhD in Immunology from North Carolina State University in 2006
and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in thrombosis and hemostasis at the
Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA in 2007.
Dr Kidd is a small animal internal medicine diplomate of the ACVIM
and is currently an Assistant Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine
at Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Stefanie Klenner received her DMV from the Veterinary College of Hannover in 2006
and completed a residency at the University of Giessen in 2010.
She is a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology and has been an instructor
in the Laboratory Quality Management courses since 2009.
Dr. Sally Lester received her DVM from Washington State University in 1967
and her MVSc from the University of Saskatchewan Western College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Lester is the laboratory director for Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital and Seattle Veterinary Specialists.
Dr. Lester is a diplomate of the ACVP in both clinical and anatomic pathology and is a VIN consultant.
Dr. Karri Meleo received her DVM from the University of California-Davis in 1988.
Dr. Meleo is an oncology diplomate of the ACVIM and is also a diplomate of the ACVR.
Dr. Meleo is in private practice at Animal Cancer Specialists and is a VIN consultant.

This week will cover production of cells, hormonal and nutritional influence on cell production,
cytokines and the bone marrow, and iron metabolism and its relationship to hematopoiesis.

and annually thereafter and 'Newer' measurands on some instruments and their significance.

This week will cover immunosuppressive therapy for the treatment of IMHA, and review the prothrombotic mechanisms of IMHA and
thromboprophylaxis in these patients.
Week 7 (Real Time Session October 4):
Oncologic Hematology

This week will cover CBC in an untreated cancer patient, + CBC as the patient goes through chemotherapy,
+ CBC in patients with total, or half-body, radiation in transplant or various other protocols,
causality of leukemias, + new diagnostics related to telling how leukemias are different, and therapy.
