Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians
actively interested in the diagnosis and treatment of external diseases
of the ear in small animals.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians.
This course has been RACE approved for veterinarians.

Course Description:
Otitis externa in small animals ranks one of the most common
problems we face as veterinary practitioners. This course is
designed to address problems with ear disease in small animals
and provide practical solutions.
This course consists of two (2) 2-hour Real Time Session,
supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions,
and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
*The lecture portion of this course will be an audio presentation,
please be prepared to listen.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- diagnose and provide treatment for Otitis Externa.
- use and discuss bacterial cultures.
- diagnose and manage diseases of the pinna.

in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

About the Instructors:
VIN Consultant and ACVD boarded dermatologist
Mitchell Song
received his veterinary degree from Mississippi State University
and completed a residency in dermatology at the University of California,
Davis. He is currently the owner of Animal Dermatology, PC in Scottsdale
and Phoenix, Arizona USA.
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session February 2, 2014):
Anatomy and physiology of the canine ear & Bacterial and fungal diseases of the ear
Content:
In order to establish a base of understanding we will begin with an
overview of the anatomy and basic physiology of the canine ear.
Anatomical terms will be given so we may all have a point of reference.
Histologic structures will be discussed to emphasize disease processes
later in the course. There will be a brief discussion of the ear physiology.
Bacterial flora and disease will be given as an overview.
Bacterial cultures and how to use them will be discussed with examples
for cases. A discussion of resistant Pseudomonas sp. otitis will be
given along with case material. Debate will be presented about the
use of systemic antibiotics vs. topical therapy. Finally, we will
conclude with information about Malassezia sp. otitis.
Week 2 (Real Time Session February 9, 2014):
Parasitic and allergic diseases of the ear & Diseases of the pinna
Content:
The session will begin with a talk about parasites which may
infest the ears. Parasites will be followed by a discussion about
allergic otitis and why proper diagnosis and treatment of this is
so important in veterinary medicine. Long-term management will
be emphasized.
We will conclude our series with diagnosis and management of
diseases of the pinna. Examples will be given along with a
discussion of these often frustrating cases and how to treat them.
The diagnosis and treatment of external diseases of the ear in
small animal is an exciting and timely topic. Bring your cases
to the discussion boards.
