Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate level course is tailored for small animal veterinarians
interested in dermatology topics. The participants in this course should have basic general
medical knowledge and basic canine and feline anatomy and physiology.

This course has been RACE approved for veterinarians.
Course Description:
The course includes a practical approach to various common skin diseases based on updated
review information, case presentations and practical tips, and so should offer something
for most participating veterinarians. It will cover the most common fungal skin infections
in dogs and cats, anti-fungal therapy, MRS pyoderma; and the different types of allergies
(fleas, food and environmental allergens). Emphasis will be put mainly on case presentations
and updates on the management of the various diseases presented during this course.
This course consists of three (3) 2-hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
*The lecture portion of this course will be an audio presentation, please be prepared to listen.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- Recognize skin lesions and relate them, if possible, to specific diseases
- Be familiar with diagnostic tests and know when and how to use them
- Be aware of various treatment options

About the Instructors:
ACVD boarded dermatologist
Patrick Hensel received his veterinary
degree from University of Bern, Switzerland. He completed a doctorate thesis
and rotating internship at the University of Zurich, Switzerland followed
by a veterinary dermatology residency at the University of Georgia. He is currently
Associate Professor of Veterinary Dermatology at the University of Georgia appointed
for teaching, service and research with a strong interest in allergic
and infectious skin diseases.
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session February 10):
Most Common Fungal Skin Infections
Content:
In this session we will discuss the most common fungal skin infections
(Malassezia dermatitis and Dermatophytosis) in dogs and cats
and the corresponding antifungal therapy.
Week 2 (Real Time Session February 17):
Update on MRS Pyoderma
Content:
In this session we will review pyoderma in dogs with a main focus on MRSA vs. MRSP
and their importance in regards to possible public health concerns
between pet owners and their pets.
Week 3 (Real Time Session February 24):
Allergies
Content:
In this session we will concentrate on clinical presentation of various allergic
skin conditions (fleas bite hypersensitivity, Mosquito bite hypersensitivity,
food adverse reaction and atopy) with a focus on thorough diagnostic work-up
and an update on recommended allergy management.
