Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course,
we request you attend a practice session prior to the first Real Time Session. Times and dates will be listed
in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held
prior to the first Real Time Session.
Level and Prerequisites:
Participants in this course should be well versed in basic feline anatomy and physiology;
this course is geared toward a veterinarian interested in dermatology topics.
The course level has something to offer for most practitioners.
There is basic review information, practical information for mid-level veterinarians
and a minor amount of advanced material to keep it interesting.

Course Description:
Dermatology Therapeutics is a review of the new "hot topics" in dermatological therapy.
Included in this lecture will be some of the current thoughts on the treatment of skin disease.
See what some of the world's leading experts are using.
What's new, what some of the prevailing thoughts are about pathogenesis and what to do with some of your
difficult and hard to treat cases.
This is not an in-depth seminar, rather a quick overview to see what's happening in the treatment of skin disease.
This course consists of one (1) 2 hour Real Time Session with
supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory
end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- Learn and become familiar with current concepts regarding Staph. pseudintermedius , MSRA and MSRP
- Be able to choose effective systemic and topical antibacterial medications to treat bacterial skin disease
- Know current concepts in the diagnosis and treatment of dermatophytosis
- Know which topical medications to use in cornification defects and how to use them
- Be able to discuss a brief pathogenesis of atopic skin disease and which medications are effective
- Be familiar with current flea treatment protocols and control measures
- Discuss different treatments for demodicosis in the dog and cat
- Be able to discuss systemic and topical treatments for lupus erythematosus and pemphigus foliaceous
- Briefly discuss current concepts in the use of systemic and topical treatments for allergic otitis externa and Pseudomonas sp. ear infections

in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

About the Instructors:
VIN Consultant and ACVD boarded dermatologist Mitchell Song received his veterinary degree from
Mississippi State University and completed a residency in dermatology at the
University of California, Davis.
He is currently the owner of Animal Dermatology, PC in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona USA.

Week 1 (Real Time Session February 22): Dermatology Therapeutics
Content:
- Bacterial - Review of Staph pseudintermedius, MRSA, MRSP (current thought and therapy),
Commonly used systemic antibiotics, & Topical antibacterial agents
- Fungal/Yeast - Dermatophytosis, Malassezia sp., Systemic antifungal medication, & Topical antifungal medication
- Cornification defects (seborrhea) - Topical medications
- Allergic skin disease - Review (brief) of atopic dermatitis, Systemic medications & Topical medications
- Parasitic skin disease - Fleas please!, Flea control measures (an end to the confusion), Flea control for cats & Demodex and the others
- Autoimmune skin disease - Pemphigus, Lupus, Systemic treatments (what works and what doesn't) & Topical treatments
- Otitis - Review and current thoughts on otitis externa, Pseudomonas sp. Otitis, Systemic therapy (indications and controversy) & Topical therapy
CE CREDITS: 2
Tuition: Member $40 ($36 early bird special if enrolled by February 1, 2012).
Non-Member $98 ($88 early bird special if enrolled by February 1, 2012).

Real Time Session unless otherwise noted. If the first Real Time Session is on a
weekend, course enrollment will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.
