Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience

Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians
actively interested in veterinary dentistry, specifically exodontia.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians.
This course has been RACE approved for veterinarians.
The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.
Course Description:
This course is designed to focus on canine and feline dentistry in order to
strengthen the attendee's knowledge and skills in dog and cat exodontia.
Complete oral examination, charting, and treatment planning will be thoroughly
reviewed. Discussion of intraoral radiographic acquisition and interpretation,
periodontal disease, gingivostomatitis, tooth resorption, common oral tumors,
and extraction techniques will be presented with numerous visual aids to
enhance learning and increase retention for the attendees. Pathophysiology
and treatment planning for the aforementioned diseases will be covered.
Clinical cases will be used to set the stage for step-by-step presentations
for canine tooth extractions with heavy emphasis on being able to predict
the difficult tooth extraction, extraction pitfalls and complications will
be presented to help attendees minimize complications and address
complications if they should occur in clinical practice. The laboratory
will provide the opportunity to put clinical skills into practice.
The VIN CE online portion of the course
consists of three (3) 2-hour Real Time Sessions, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better)
on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for
the course.

The in-person portion of the course
will consist of two (2) consecutive days of laboratory experience held in the
Oquendo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- Understand clinical presentations, current knowledge of pathophysiology,
diagnostics and treatment options and techniques for canine periodontal
disease, tooth resorption, fractured teeth, and common oral neoplasia.
- Produce and interpret canine intraoral radiographs.
- Perform surgical extractions of the dog dentition.
- Increase knowledge, confidence, and skill level in diagnosing and
treating canine dental and oral diseases.
Course Materials: Course materials will be available
in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook(s): There is no required textbook for this course.
About the Instructors:
Dr. Steve Holmstrom was one of the two original VIN Dental
Consultants. He has co-authored the textbook which the course is based on,
Veterinary Dental Techniques, which is in its 3rd edition and in 4 languages.
He has also authored
Veterinary Dentistry: A Team Approach, in its second
edition and edited three editions of
Veterinary Clinics of North America.
He was the chairperson for the first and second editions of the
AAHA Dental Guidelines. He practices at the Animal Dental Clinic
in San Carlos, California.
Dr. Jan Bellows received his undergraduate training at the
University of Florida and Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University.
After completing a small animal internship at The Animal Medical Center
in New York City, he returned to south Florida where he still practices
companion animal medicine, surgery and dentistry. He was certified by the
Board of Veterinary Practitioners (canine and feline) in 1986 and
the College of Veterinary Dentistry in 1990. Currently he is president
of the American Veterinary Dental College (2013-14).
He has authored three dental texts-
The Practice of Veterinary Dentistry � A Team Effort (1999),
mall Animal Dental Equipment, Materials, and Techniques (2005) and
Feline Dentistry (2010). He is a frequent contributor to
DVM Newsmagazine and a charter consultant of Veterinary Information Network's
(VIN) dental board since 1993. He was also chosen as one of the dental experts
to formulate AAHA's
Small Animal Dental Guidelines published in 2005
and updated in 2013.
Dr. Christopher Snyder is a graduate of The Ohio State
University's College of Veterinary Medicine and completed residency
training in Dentistry and Oral Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
School of Veterinary Medicine. Since joining the faculty at
University of Wisconsin, he has taught 400+ veterinary students
and has lectured nationally and internationally. In addition to authoring
numerous journal articles, a particular research interest includes
investigating new techniques for improving regional anesthesia for the
oral surgery patient.

Week 2 (Real Time Session January 13, 2014)

- Local intraoral anesthesia
Week 3 (Real Time Session January 20, 2014)
Content:
- Mucoperiosteal flaps and surgical extractions step-by-by step
- Complications during canine extractions
- Tooth resorption and treatment
Oquendo Center(In-person Lab Session 1 January 25, 2014)
Lab, Radiology, Tooth Extractions
Schedule:
- 8:00-10:00 am
Oral examination, charting and intraoral radiography - the
attendee will become comfortable with a comprehensive oral
examination, the instruments needed and production of a
time-efficient but detailed medical record along with the
use of digital dental radiographic equipment to understand
proper positioning to produce diagnostic images in addition
to image interpretation.
- 10:00-11:00 am
Introduction to the care and use of hand and power instruments
required for exodontia.
- 11:00-Noon
Non-surgical and surgical extraction of teeth in dogs and cats,
including the use of mucogingival flaps, buccal cortical osteotomy,
tooth sectioning, proper selection and technique for elevators/luxators
and forceps, suture selection and surgical closure.
- 1:00-5:00 pm
Continue non-surgical and surgical extraction of teeth, learn ways to
extract teeth with less bone removal, the use of alternative instruments,
and local anesthesia.

Fractured Tips, Recovering from Complications in Exodontics

When bad things happen to good people, learn how to effectively and safely
retrieve solidly-held broken root tips, root tips that inadvertently
are pushed into the nasal sinus, infraorbital canal or mandibular canal.
Recovering from common "blunders" in exodontics.
- 1:00-4:00 pm
Oronasal fistula repair, alternative methods for safe tooth extraction,
further master extraction techniques of their personal interest,
radiographic interpretation or catch a flight that will get you home
Sunday evening.
CE CREDITS: 6
