Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session is up to 1 hour in length.

*The instructors for this course will be using audio which will require you to have a headset of speakers to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your computer's audio capabilities, please be sure to attend one of the Practice Sessions.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians interested in business aspects of animal behaviour. Participants in this course should have a basic understanding of animal behaviour and welfare.

VIN CE course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/VSPN members. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Course Description:
Instead of saying "I don't do behaviour in my practice," learn how to incorporate behaviour services into your general practice and make it profitable, while improving the welfare of your patients.

This course consists of two (2) 1.5 hour Real Time Sessions with audio for questions and answers, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to

• understand the benefits of providing behaviour consultations in General Practice.
• recognize the financial benefits of providing behaviour consultations in their practice.
• understand the roles the veterinarian, veterinary technician, veterinary behaviourist, and trainer play in the rehabilitation of an animal with behavioural problems.
• understand the basics of animal behaviour and recognize some of the commonly held misconceptions regarding animal behaviour and behaviour counseling.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required textbook: There is no required textbook for this course.

About the Instructors:
Debbie Calnon currently divides her time between seeing referral cases to her Behaviour Counseling Service and teaching behaviour topics to veterinarians, veterinary nurses, trainers and other groups interested in small animal behaviour. She is President of the Australian Veterinary Behaviour Interest Group and is passionate about promoting the importance of behavioural medicine to the veterinary profession. Debbie enjoys sharing ideas and experiences on VIN and appreciates the benefits of being part of the supportive VIN community.

Kersti Seksel is a registered veterinary specialist in behavioural medicine and is board certified in the Australian, American and European Colleges. She works in two specialist referral practices as well as her own practice seeing behaviour cases in both Sydney and Melbourne in Australia. She is Associate Senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University and teaches the Distance Education course in Behavioural Medicine for the Centre of Veterinary Education at the University of Sydney, presents education courses all over the world in behavioural medicine, and writes for scientific journals, textbooks, as well as popular magazines. She is a regular presenter in the media and currently is the President of the Australian Companion Animal Council and loves being part of the wider VIN community.

Course Outline:
Week 1: (Real Time Session June 20): Behaviour Consultations, Basics, and Equipment
Content:

• Behaviour Consultations in General Practice
• Behaviour Basics-Fact and Fiction
• Equipment-what do you need, what should you recommend? What should you avoid?

Week 2: (Real Time Session June 27): Roles of those involved and Financial Implication
Content:

• Role of the Veterinarian, Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Behaviourist and Trainer
• Financial Implications-can you afford not to do it?

CE CREDITS: 3

Tuition: Member $60 ($54 early bird special if enrolled by June 6, 2012).
Non-Member $124 ($112 early bird special if enrolled by June 6, 2012).

*To ensure participants are ready and prepared for classes, enrollment will close when the maximum number of participants is reached or at 5pm ET the day of the first Real Time Session unless otherwise noted. If the first Real Time Session is on a weekend, course enrollment will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.

1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
