Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians actively interested in small animal behavior. This course has been specifically tailored for the small animal practitioner and veterinary technician. Participants require a basic knowledge of anatomy, neurology, physiology, animal behavior and welfare. This course includes practical approaches to various pet anxiety issues.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Course Description:
This course is designed to allow discussions in the different areas of pet anxieties, fears and phobias. It will include some strategies to help you diagnose and treat your patients' anxiety disorders and support their owners as effectively as possible. No two behavior cases are the same. However a review of the pathogenesis of these disorders, the general principles that apply for them, together with case studies, will give you more confidence in managing these cases in your practice. There will also be an overview of the role of medication and environmental management in anxiety disorders. Veterinarians practicing at all levels of the veterinary field are invited to participate.

This course consists of four (4) 90-minute Real Time Session, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Recommended Textbook(s): About the Instructors:
Debbie Calnon currently divides her time between seeing referral cases to her Behaviour Counseling Service and teaching behaviour topics to veterinarians, veterinary nurses, trainers and other groups interested in small animal behaviour. She is Past President of the Australian Veterinary Behaviour Interest Group and is passionate about promoting the importance of behavioural medicine to the veterinary profession. Debbie enjoys sharing ideas and experiences on VIN and appreciates the benefits of being part of the supportive VIN community.

Kersti Seksel is a registered veterinary specialist in behavioural medicine and is board certified in the Australian, American and European Colleges. She works in two specialist referral practices as well as her own practice seeing behaviour cases in both Sydney and Melbourne in Australia. She is Associate Senior lecturer at Charles Stuart University and teaches the Distance Education course in Behavioural Medicine for the Centre of Veterinary Education at the University of Sydney, presents education courses all over the world in behavioural medicine, and writes for scientific journals, textbooks, as well as popular magazines. She is a regular presenter in the media and currently is the President of the Australian Companion Animal Council and loves being part of the wider VIN community.

Content: Week 2 (Real Time Session June 19): Dogs and Anxiety Canine Aggression
Content: Week 3 (Real Time Session June 26): Cats and Anxiety
Content: Week 4 (Real Time Session July 3): Noise Phobias and Separation Anxiety
Content: CE CREDITS: 6

Tuition: Member $120 ($108 early bird special if enrolled by May 22, 2013)
Non-Member $201 ($181 early bird special if enrolled by May 22, 2013)

*To ensure participants are ready and prepared for classes, enrollment will close when the maximum number of participants is reached or at 5pm ET the day of the first Real Time Session unless otherwise noted. If the first Real Time Session is on a weekend, course enrollment will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.
