Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first Real Time Session. Times and dates will be listed in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held prior to the first Real Time Session.

*The instructors for this course will be using audio which will require you to have a headset or speakers to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your computer's audio capabilities, please be sure to attend one of the Practice Sessions.

Level and Prerequisites: Participants in this course should have some prior clinical experience with anesthesia delivery to small companion animals. This course is geared toward veterinarians and credentialed technicians with an interest in anesthesia delivery to and surgical pain relief rabbits and ferrets. All technicians enrolled must:

1. Have a current license/credential issued by their state;
2. Have a veterinarian in the same practice also enrolled in the course.

VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians. This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Course Description:
This course will introduce practitioners to a safe and versatile approach to anesthesia for rabbits and ferrets. Instructors will address the unique anesthesia challenges presented by each of these species. Emphasis will be on drug selection, anesthesia equipment, monitoring and atraumatic endotracheal intubation. An entire real time session will be devoted to atraumatic intubation, as the instructors strongly believe that intubation is essential to safe anesthesia in rabbits and ferrets.

This course consists of three (3) two-hour Real Time Sessions, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to

• Intubate both rabbits and ferrets using a variety of techniques
• Deliver and monitor inhalant anesthesia to rabbits and ferrets safely
• Select drug protocols that meet the needs of the individual patient

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required textbooks: There is no required textbook for this course.

About the Instructors:
Originally from Montreal, Dr. Nancy Brock obtained her DVM degree from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph in 1982. She completed a residency in anesthesia and critical care at the University of California, Davis in 1988. In 1995, she became certified as a veterinary anesthesia specialist and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists.

Based in Vancouver British Columbia, Dr. Brock is a regular contributor and consultant for the VIN (Veterinary Anesthesia Network). She is also a clinical instructor of anesthesia at Douglas College's AHT program in Coquitlam BC.

As part of her clinical anesthesia referral practice, Dr Brock provides veterinarians and their nursing staff with anesthesia assistance and expertise. This assistance comes in the form of telephone consultation, in-clinic delivery of anesthesia to high risk or fragile patients and the training of veterinarians and technicians in advanced anesthesia techniques. She is also the author of a quick reference anesthesia publication entitled Veterinary Anesthesia Update for small animal practitioners.

Originally from Alaska, Dr. Heidi Shafford obtained her DVM from Colorado State University in 2000. As a veterinary student, she discovered her passion for anesthesia and pain management. Following residency and graduate training in veterinary anesthesiology and physiology at the University of Missouri, she attained board certification by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists in 2005.

Dr. Shafford is passionate about improving anesthesia safety and patient comfort. Inspired to take her anesthesia and pain management expertise into private practice, she started an anesthesia consulting practice in 2007. Dr. Shafford owns and operates Veterinary Anesthesia Specialists, LLC, based in Portland, Oregon. She works with private practices to enhance the comfort of all creatures through education, consultation and patient care. Dr. Shafford anesthetizes patients in the Portland area, leads in-clinic workshops for teams, and lectures extensively to veterinary professionals nationwide. When it comes to rabbits and ferrets, Dr. Shafford has extensive experience anesthetizing and successfully intubating these two species - and teaching veterinarians and technicians to do the same.

Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session May 29):
Content: Equipment selection for anesthesia delivery and monitoring.

Week 2 (Real Time Session June 5):
Content: Anesthesia drug selection for premedication, induction and maintenance of anesthesia.

Week 3 (Real Time Session June 12):
Content: Intubation techniques

CE CREDITS: 6

Tuition: Member $120 ($108 early bird special if enrolled by May 8, 2012).
Non-Member $201 ($181 early bird special if enrolled by May 8, 2012).

*To ensure participants are ready and prepared for classes, enrollment will close when the maximum number of participants is reached or at 5pm ET the day of the first Real Time Session unless otherwise noted. If the first Real Time Session is on a weekend, course enrollment will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.
